To begin a career as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), the first step is to finish a phlebotomy training program successfully.
Classes are usually small, with around 10–30 candidates.
Classroom work is typically approximately 40–80 hours of study and then 20-40 clinical hours of practice that supplement classroom work.
Clinical training is often held at a medical institute or lab.
Career Outlook
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for phlebotomists is expected to increase 8 percent from 2022 to 2032.
Getting Certified
To become certified, a phlebotomist must be tested by an authorization agency, such as the NPS.
Once approved, candidates need to renew their certification every two years.
Requirements for phlebotomy training school:
- Eighteen years of age or older
- High School Diploma or equivalency
- Negative TB test/hepatitis test
- A clean background check (no felonies)
Let’s take a moment to make clear a common misconception.
Candidates earn a Certificate of Completion after completing a phlebotomy training class.
This is a Certificate of Completion, but it doesn’t make students “Certified.”
A Certificate of Completion is proof that applicants have earned that
demonstrates that they’ve completed the coursework at a phlebotomy training school, which is the first and vital step required to sit for the national certification test.

Phlebotomy Training Specialists
Phlebotomy Training Specialists understand that students have demanding lives, and they work to support applicants by providing daytime, evening, and weekend courses to fit their schedules.
All classes are developed to support candidates as they acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to quickly enter the rewarding and remunerative medical field as a phlebotomist.
Upon graduating from the Phlebotomy Training Specialists program, students are qualified to work in Oregon.
Candidates also have the opportunity to work in other states, with the caveat that some states, such as California, Nevada, Washington, and Louisiana, have additional licensing requirements before working in their field.
Approved by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission, the classroom instruction includes 48 hours of didactic in-class phlebotomy training.
At the culmination of the coursework, students can take the National Exam proctored on-site on the last day of class!
