Lifespan is a health system founded by two Rhode Island hospitals that works with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, to provide academic opportunities to residents who are unemployed or underemployed.

Students must be willing to work for a minimum of one year in the field that they train for.

Students participate in classroom training with hands-on experience at a Lifespan hospital affiliate.

Northwest Phlebotomy School

About the School

The goal of this school is to get students certified and out into the workforce quickly.

The course lasts for two or three days.

Courses Offered

Evening (6-9 pm) and daytime (10am to 1pm) classes are offered.

Day one is half a day of lectures and half spent in a hands-on lab learning how to draw blood on a simulated arm and applying the tourniquets and finding veins.

Day two includes discussions about children and the elderly and injury prevention, followed by actually drawing blood from a live person.

The last day covers preventing infection and pathogens and going over the things learned on days one and two.

Classes are kept small usually from 10 to 15 students.

A certificate is granted after completion of the classes.

Students must have a high school diploma or a GED.

The cost of tuition is $675.

Cranston Adult Education Programs

About the School

Cranston, RI Adult Education Program is five miles from Providence and offers a course designed for adults.

Courses Offered

The adult education program takes five months and is held mostly in the classroom.

Students will learn basic anatomy and procedures.

100 hours of supervised clinical training is also required.

The medical terminology course is a prerequisite for this course.

Tuition is $1550 not inclusive of books and fees.

This is a 16-week course.

Students must have scrubs by week three.

Attendance and participation is absolutely required.

Also required are at least 100 successful venipunctures through clinical rotation.
